Prompt "Close programs to prevent information loss"

Some machines (including mine) started to get this prompt frequently after upgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1.

My machine has 16 GB RAM.  When this happens, there is still a few GB free memory.  It is not related to any specific application.  It seems to be the case for others experiencing the same problem.   Some W8.1 users never see this.

I am wondering if anyone could share some insight into this issue, especially any tips to prevent this.

It happened again a moment ago.  It wanted me to close Windows Explorer.  I did not obey the order.  Everything has been fine.

I am experiencing the exact same issue. I recently upgraded to windows 8.1 x64, I have more than 20GB free in C Drive/Windows Volume. I have 8GB of RAM most (4GB+) of which is free when this message appears.

I check task manager and it shows that quite a large amount of memory is free! There is no extensive data usage and i cant seem to figure out why it complains of low memory?

It has been appearing for Visual Studio 2012, the exact same dialog whose screenshot you added above..

Please let me know if you find a solution. This dialog box has started to bug for quite a few days now...!

This "Close programs to avoid information loss" happens to me as well. I think it started after I switched from VisualStudio 2012 to Visual Studio 2013. Though I'm running Windows 7 / 64 bit not windows 8.1. I have 16 gb internal memory installed. When the dialog appears I typically have 8 gb of internal memory free according to task manager. I also use SQL server and most of the times outlook 2007 and spotify is running.
